A broadcast lighting, visuals, and scenic designer who has worked on some of the world’s most dazzling entertainment events, Christian Choi enjoys sharing his diverse software skills with Vectorworks clients.
“It’s good to be able to give something back,” says the American-born Vectorworks trainer, who launched his career in 1988 as a teenager growing up in Las Vegas.
Starting out as a spotlight operator in a casino theatre, Christian was perfectly poised to take advantage of a new era in technology-driven entertainment. Subsequently appointed lighting designer at Vegas World, he familiarised himself with Vari-Lites – now widely used as automated variable-colour stage lighting systems in theatre, concerts, television, films and corporate events.
“They were the first of their kind,” he recalls, “robotic lights that blinked, moved and changed colour like Star Wars’ RTD2 units. I could see their possibilities.”
Mastering automated lighting programming, Christian then had a memorable three years working on the Cirque du Soleil Mystere performances when the permanent show opened at Treasure Island Resort in 1992.
The new was overtaking the old as glitzy new hotels attracted visitors to Las Vegas to see their shows. With no financial constraints applying, Christian could order what he wanted for programming Cirque du Soleil’s Mystere – “it was a whole new ball game in Vegas at the time”.
That, in turn, boosted his reputation as a lighting director, and he was then able to take on freelance assignments. He “hit the road” on concert tours with such high profile performers as Gloria Estefan, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Mariah Carey, Cher and Neil Diamond.
It was on Michael Jackson’s 1995 HIStory world tour that Christian met his wife-to-be, Wendy, in New Zealand. Now, this country and the USA have become his “homes”. Based on the North Shore, Christian works several months of every year on spectaculars staged in North America.
Having established Emergent Entertainment Group in the USA, he is currently extending the multi-disciplinary design firm – a specialist in broadcast lighting design, scenic production design and video screen production – into New Zealand.
Multi-talented in using a wide range of software tools, Christian can help Vectorworks and C4D users with whatever is needed to get the job done.
Peter Coombes has a background in yacht and boat design, which says much about his intuitive grasp of presentation and applied design.
Pete has recently joined Megabits as a Cinema 4D trainer after moving to Auckland from London last year. Skilled in enhancing presentations, he has quickly established himself as a valued member of our team.
The founder and director of architectural visualisation company Clear Ltd, Pete has had considerable experience of working in the architectural industry. That includes heading the visualisation department of one of the UK’s leading practices.
Since his childhood, when he keyed-in programs on a ZX Spectrum, Pete has been fascinated with the promise of computers and he has used them throughout his professional life. With years of experience using CAD and graphics programs, including Vectorworks and Cinema4D, his depth of understanding means he can generate solutions to the most challenging design problems.
Pete says his background in yacht design continues to influence his work as a designer. He’s been sailing since before he can remember, and raced, delivered and designed many boats in the early years of his working life.
Real-world experience informs his ability to determine what’s needed to communicate ideas to target audiences. As a designer himself, Pete appreciates the importance of work flow and the pressures that attend a current job.
Pete has completed courses in life drawing, photography and music and is studying for a maths degree through the UK’s Open University. He’s a keen runner and cyclist, and has cycled in North America, the South Island and the UK.
Always keen to embrace the new opportunities in his life, he says he’s very excited to be part of the Megabits team, providing training, support and advice to our valued Cinema 4D clients. In addition to training, Pete is also available as a contract visualiser to take Vectorworks graphics, to the 4th dimension, in Cinema 4D, for those clients who have yet to invest in this great tool.
As with all our trainers, he can be reached within a day and will undertake site visits, although he is more conveniently available on line.
